FW Howay‘s global stewardship program began in 2008. It was then that we named oursleves Howay Helping Hands. Since then, the students have been learning about the needs of others nearby and far away and have been involved in annual local and global fundraisers. Howay Helping Hands continues to “be the change we wish to see in the world”.

Our 2018 Global Fundraiser is in partnership with Free the Children (Me to We) and our focus this year is WATER.

FACTS: World Health Organization (WHO) 2018

844 million people lack even a basic drinking-water service, including 159 million people who are dependent on surface water

Globally, at least 2 billion people use a contaminated drinking water source

The responsbility to journey for clean water several times a day most often falls to girls in a family, which means they are unable to attend school. The young girls are often carrying up to 40 pounds of water on their long journey, several times a day. The water they locate is most often laden with serious bacteria and diseases which cause illness and death.

Access to clean water changes lives. It means better health. It means girls and women can get an education. It means having sanitation. It means healthier livestock and crops. It all starts with water. Something most of us take for granted on a daily basis. Free the Children informs us that for $25 one person will have access to clean water for their whole  life!!

Howay students have been learning about the global water crisis and also about water conservation at home. They  have shown deep compassion and passion for wanting to help others far away have a better standard of living by helping them have access to clean water.

On June 15 we will be WALKING FOR WATER. Students and staff will walk the upper grass field circumference while carrying water in a container from home (milk jug, large pop bottle) or a backpack filled with books etc. to simulate weight of water. (kid craft to make carrier for water: https://www.we.org/we-families/resources/all/walk-water-kid-size-jerry-can-craft )
