We Scare Hunger 2018
This year our Howay Helping Hands local fundraiser was called We Scare Hunger. The students learned about the need for ongoing donations to local food banks. They also discovered what may lead a person/family to seek support at a food bank.
We chose to work with Union Gospel Mission located in New Westminster. They are an amazing organization, all volunteer based. They provide hot breakfast, snacks and lunch on a daily basis. They provide classes in art and technology. Their facilities include showers and clean clothing. They also assist families in basic every day needs in an emergency base (toiletries, diapers).
Our goal was to collect two LARGE boxes full of non perishable food. Our main goal was ONE LARGE box, and if we met our goal Mrs. Phelan would take part in consuming bean boozled jelly beans at our Halloween assembly/parade. Our super goal was to fill TWO LARGE boxes and then Mrs. Phelan would eat a chocolate covered cricket and worm. We met our goals EASILY. Howay Helping Hands are super keen to help those in need!!!
On October 31 in an assembly in the gym we celebrated our success by watching Mrs. Phelan eat bamboozled jelly beans and a chocolate covered cricket and worm!!! Everyone cheered!!! Mrs. Phelan is such a good sport!!
On November 13 students bagged up the food and loaded Mrs. Dupuis truck. Three student council members accompanied Mrs. Dupuis to Union Gospel Mission to deliver the food. They were most grateful!!! and surprised how much food a small school could collect. They gave us a tour of their whole facility including the kitchen (meeting the chef) and eating/social area.
What a successful fundraiser!!! The volunteers loved our fundraiser theme “We Scare Hunger. We hope to work them again in the near future.
